Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who
Took Vegas for Millions
by Ben Mezrich
A
true story that reads like a novel, Bringing Down the House is a must
read for anyone fascinated by the planning and execution of great moneymaking
schemes.
I
learned to count cards many years ago and became just proficient enough
to nearly break even over a large number of hands. Card counters
are facing a very tough row to hoe these days. The casinos have implemented
rules and tracking techniques that make it difficult to profit at blackjack.
Card counting depends on tracking cards for multiple hands from an unshuffled
deck. Six deck shoes and early shuffling have rendered all but the most
diligent counters ineffective.
That
brings me to the six mathematically gifted Massachusetts Institute of
Technology Students who raped casinos across the nation, and abroad,
for millions of dollars over an extended period of time. No mean feat.
Organized
by a retired professor, the M.I.T. Blackjack team, through training,
practice, and the added deception gained from working as partners, overcome
the stifling rules and watchful eye of the casino security teams.
I
couldn't put this book down. It follows Ben Mezrich's experience as
a team member recruited by a fellow student. Mezrick quickly evolves
from average mathematically brilliant schoolboy, to a guy who's hiding
huge sums of cash from airport cops on Vegas bound flights.
The
plot thickens as Mezrick becomes obsessed and intensely involved in
maintaining team profit and anonymity. It becomes quite a bumpy ride.
Bringing
Down the House is a great story and not diminished in the least by it's
documentary nature. I recommend it highly and thoroughly enjoyed it.
